Way To Go, Susie!
By Judy Shaner

Susan Brendle will graduate on May 11th from the University of South Carolina with a Masters degree in Library Science (MLS). She was selected as the first recipient of the Wilma Ash Scholarship, established by the Friends of  Union County Library. The scholarship was established to aid and encourage community members to pursue a course of study leading to a degree in Library Science and to honor Wilma Ash, the librarian at Union County Library. Susie worked full time at Union County Library while earning her degree by satellite and once a month traveled to the niversity at Columbia, SC, for onsite instruction. Next time you see Susie in the library congratulate her on her achievement!

Georgia Legislative Day
 By Pat Scott

Union County Library is part of the Mountain Regional Library System, which includes Fannin, Union, and Towns counties. On February 14, the Georgia Library Association sponsored the 2002 Georgia Legislative Day in Atlanta.

Members of library boards, library staff, Friends members, and other interested advocates were invited to attend for a morning briefing, a visit to the Capitol, and lunch with our legislators. This year was deemed to be especially important as funds are needed for construction of a new library in Fannin County (Blue Ridge) and renovation funds for all MRLS libraries.

The news at the briefing was not good. We are talking about budgets for 2003. Governor Barnes, in preliminary budget recommendations, had only allocated $1,811,276 of the $24,578,976 requested by the Board of Regents for libraries statewide. There were no funds for books and materials, vacation reading, new construction, or renovations.

At lunch we were able to meet briefly with the state legislators for our district: Senator Carol Jackson, Senator Bill Stephens, Representatives Amos Amerson and Ralph Twiggs.

We all expressed our concerns (there were nine of us from our district). We know they will do everything they can to get some funds reinstated.

My thanks to Teresa Dorton, Marketing Director for United Community Banks, for offering to pay the $36 registration fee for me to attend and see the inner workings of our state government.
