Holiday Party

by Pat Scott

Casseroles, yummy sausages, salads, cookies, cheesecake, sodas, coffee, holiday music, festive decorations, and a wild and wacky gift exchange--alI this was in place on Wednesday evening, December 11, for our annual holiday party. If you were not there, we missed you.

A special treat was the reading by Bobbi Tower of a beautifully written and illustrated book on how "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" came to be written.  Bobbi has donated a copy to the library.  You might want to check on that sometime as it well worth reviewing.

2003 Membership Drive

by Michelle Maloney

Our membership drive for 2003 has been incredibly exciting. At this point, we have 172 members and are receiving renewals and new memberships every day. This year for the first time, we sent membership fliers with the October bills of the Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Membership Corporation (BRMEMC). The response has been overwhelming and we are thrilled to welcome so many new members. Your support and enthusiasm is greatly appreciated. Also, we happily welcome back so many of you who have already renewed your previous memberships. Your continued involvement means a tremendous amount in terms of what we can do for our library.

This year we have added many new members who are part-time residents of Union County.  As a reminder, if you own property and thus pay property taxes in Union County, you may obtain a Union County library card. You can use your BRMEMC bill as verification when applying for a card.  However, if you already have a card from another library that is part of the Georgia PINES system, you may use that card at the Union County Public Library as well.

A huge welcome once again to all of you who have joined for 2003.  With your support, we truly can make a difference! (And if you haven't yet renewed, we would encourage you to do so!)

THE FLOOD....

by Pat Scott

On Thursday morning, November 21, our librarians arrived at work to find much of the building ankle deep in water! It had rained all the previous night, and the contracted roofing company in the process of doing roof repairs had made a "misjudgment," allowing the upstairs to become soaked, which then dripped down onto several bookstacks and computers.

The library was closed for several days while rescue efforts were in progress, including drying out several hundred books by stacking them on end on tables and floors in the multi-purpose room with box fans (on loan from volunteers) blowing on them for several days and nights. Many other books have been placed in a frost-free freezer (donated by Home Depot for this purpose) for several months, in an effort to extract water.

A meeting with our County Commissioner, Lamar Paris, assured me that the county is in contact with the insurance companies and that all efforts are in place for replacement of carpets, ceilings, and whatever books can be replaced.

Mountain Regional Library is loaning duplicates of some books while insurance claims are in progress.

Perhaps by the time you read this most repairs will have been completed. If not, please be patient.  Maybe that lemon will turn out to be lemonade!!!
