We Met The Writers
by Pattie Hamilton
The Library's multipurpose room provided the scene, Friends of Union County Library provided the light refreshments, and Carol Crawford and Ken Johnson provided the inspiration and entertainment as Friends' members and guests alike, "Meet the Writers" on Sunday afternoon, May 20. Ms. Crawford, a Texas native relocated to Blue Ridge, read from some of her original works published in such publications as The Chattahoochee Review and the Journal of Kentucky Studies. Ken Johnson read short stories and poetry he has authored and encouraged all writers to show emotion in their writings. Ken also announced that he has possibly found an illustrator for the children's books he has written. Both authors graciously answered questions about their work and the processes of writing.

BABY DAYS CELEBRATION
by Pat Scott
Baby Days were celebrated at the library on June 8 and 9 with a display of toy blocks and teddy bears wearing bibs touting "Babies Love Books." Parents were invited to bring their baby or toddler and receive a free Books For Babies kit, a sipper cup, a baby bib, the choice of a toy for siblings - even a coupon for free fries at McDonald's! Representatives of Friends were on hand to chat with the parents and help to familiarize them with the items in the kit and to apply for baby's first library card. -
Beginning this month the Books For Babies kits will be provided to new mothers at Union General Hospital. Items in the kit include: a board book for easy reading; "Babies Love Books" - a guide for grownups by Bookstart, a national program; the "ABC's for Developing Your Child's Mind"; Barbara Bush's "Family Reading Tips"; "Raising a Reader, Raising a Writer", a brochure by the National Association for The Education of Young Children; a booklet of baby games and songs, bookmarks with library and storytime information, and recommendations for books babies love.
We are contacting local businesses and organizations to be co-sponsors and partners in this program. Donation jars have been placed at various places to allow the community to participate.
