From our President:
Recently, Friends of Union County Library joined with The Family Connection, a collaborative effort of more than 148 of Georgia's 159 counties that are making a committment to protect and nurture families by being accountable for the optimal development of our most precious resource - our children.

Begun in 1991 with an initial 15 communities, Family Connection has grown to become the largest statewide network of community collaboratives in the nation.

Our effort in this project is our BOOKS FOR BABIES program where we provide information to parents of newborns to acquaint them with the important role they play in the development of their children. 50% of a child's intellectual development takes place between birth and four years! (Please see another article in this newsletter.) By verbalizing and beginning to read to babies in infancy and by becoming regular library users, parents jump-start children's learning processes and their ability to read. Books provide the key!
