A Message from the President

Have you ever stopped to ponder the power of the written word? It connects us to the past, expresses our present, and joins us to the future!

For example, are there any Jane Austen readers out there? Jane Austen wrote her novels in the 1700's, with pen and ink, and we not only enjoy them today in print, but also in movie form! Ladies, can't you just imagine strolling in a cool meadow with those lovely sun bonnets and exquisite dresses of the 1700's, arm in arm with your suitor? Gents, have you imagined yourselves as gallant and sophisticated as Pride and Prejudice's Mr. Darcy?

Another example is the timeless Holy Bible, which speaks today as the "Living Word" and offers unlimited resources and eternal promises in its pages! For a third example, we live in a time of "How To's" and can readily learn about almost anything we want to do, simply by checking out a book from our library!

The examples are as endless as each book represented in our Union County Public Library and beyond! How dear it will be for future generations to hold a cherished book in their hands from today, to read what our life was like now! What a connection! The world is at our fingertips through our local libraries, not only in printed form, but also through internet access. Research has never been so comprehensive, nor so easily available as it is at our library! Joining us to our bright future as a nation, the public library has much to offer as the immediate community reads and educates their way into a world of knowledge!

The Friends of Union County Library seek to assist our library in various ways to offer the past, present, and future to you, all at your fingertips! Whether you choose books or internet, please take a moment to think of this significance the next time you enter the library. If you do, it will enrich your visit and inspire your goals! As we celebrate our nation's independence, we can celebrate our freedom to have our libraries and all that they mean to us.
