Coffee House Socials Alive And Well....
by Jane Thompson

We continue to have full houses with our Coffee House Socials.  That success is due to our interesting speakers.  We wish to thank Robert Honea, Charles Hill, Phil Nichols,  and George Berry for coming to speak and for their time and effort.  Now mark your calendar for the last Coffee House Social  of the year, Sunday, November 16, at 2:00 pm in the multipurpose room of the library. Our guest speaker will be John Kay,  of Young Harris, Ga.: teacher, minister, speaker, and newly-elected Chairperson for the newly formed Bryon Herbert Reece Society. The group includes members from  the Towns and Union Counties area. John plans to tell us about this new Society, the Society's plans and goals, plus other information and facts concerning the late poet and author. This will be very interesting.  Look for the announcement in the local paper in early November.

These events are open to the public and we provide coffee and refreshments before and after the lectures.
Excerpt from the North Georgia News Regarding SPLOST

Once upon a time... the community library was a place where children and adults could go to check out a book, go home and read it, take it back, and get another one. Today the library is used by those who want to read the North Georgia News, those who want to go onto the internet and do everything from reading e-mail to retrieving information, and used by those who want to do some research in the volumes of reference material available. And, of course, there is still the option to go to check out a book, go home and read it, take it back, and get another one.

The Union County Library, located at the corner of Blue Ridge Street and Hospital Street (there is no longer a hospital on that street) finds itself amongst an increasing number of buildings being constructed and or renovated. The library is still functioning, in the building which many, many years ago housed a small bank. The bank has grown considerably and the library is still relatively small. The Union County community has grown and the need for a community library is still there.

The library staff and the group (Friends of Union County Library) which lends its support have often, for years, lamented the fact that the library needs to be expanded and enlarged.

"They have been telling me since I've come into office that the library is over crowded," said Union County Commissioner Lamar Paris. "They keep saying they need to expand. We have not had the money to do that expansion or even consider expansion. In examining the SPLOST and trying to anticipate what the county needs are going to be over the next five years, the library seems to me perfect for the list. Certainly you can't always address all the needs in the county, but we feel certain that within the next five years, we are going to need some type of expansion to the library. I've asked the library and the Friends of the Library to begin coming up with a plan of what the needs might be and trying to see how much of that we can fund and at what point we can fund it."

The vote on September 19 was overwhelmingly in favor of accepting SPLOST. What that will mean to our library is not known, but at least it is a step in the right direction.

Still Needed:
Fundraiser Committee Chairperson

The new Fundraising Committee still needs a chairperson. The purpose of the committee is to focus on how best to raise money to help meet the special needs of our library. We have a wonderful group of people on this committee and many activities are being considered, but we still need someone to coordinate their efforts. Your job will be to search out and field ideas that we can, as a group, make into both sustaining and annual fundraising projects. If you are interested in sharing your time and talents to help our library provide for our community, then please volunteer to chair the committee!
