President's Message:

As Friends of Union County Library, we are members of  FOLUSA (FRIENDS OF LIBRARIES, USA), a nationwide network of Friends groups. Sally Reed, the newly appointed Director of FOLUSA, gives us a little insight into her decision to accept this position: "In every library for which I worked I discovered the value of Friends. To this day, I can't imagine how any library of any type thrives without them. Oh, I suppose library staff are able to open their doors each day and offer up the standard services, but without a Friends group, I can just about guarantee those libraries don't have the support they need to take them from good to great. In the libraries I've worked for, Friends have provided furniture and books, programs and outreach, volunteer services and moral support. Friends are behind better budgets, new library additions, and even new libraries themselves."

As a child she was first exposed to the Tucson Public Library and at first could not choose which of an armload of books to take home. When told she could take them all she understood that libraries are treasure troves. "There is no doubt in my mind that a Friends group was busy working behind the scenes to help ensure that there were enough books for little girls like me who wanted all they could get!"

Most of us are members of Friends because we love books, love our library, and have a desire to support and be a part of our community. But, isn't it good to know that we are part of a much larger group that shares the same thoughts?  National Library Week is April 14 to 20, 2002. Why not drop by the library at that time and tell Wilma and the staff, "Hey - we love our library and are glad you are here"?
