Soaring To New Heights
by Michelle Maloney

We are in the midst of the 2003 membership year and are overwhelmed with the enthusiasm of so many people.  Currently our membership total is 229!  In the April newsletter, we sent reminders to those of you who had not had a chance to renew.  The response has been extremely gratifying.

We would like to take this opportunity to honor the following businesses/ organizations that have joined with us to support our library:  Blairsville Auction Barn, Blairsville Garden Club, Carter Insurance and Investments, Georgia Trading, Ltd., J. L. Company, Mountain Homes and Land, Inc., Smokey Mountain Paradise, Southern Highlands Mortgage, Todays Hearing Aid Center, Trackrock Stable, and United Community Bank.

Thanks to all of you for becoming partners in our dedication to enhancing this valuable resource, the library.  Please join us at our monthly meetings.  Good things are happening!

Meet Ruth Peters
by Judy Shaner
Our new library staff member Ruth Peters and her husband Robert (Bob) have lived in our area for the past seven years, having moved here from Belle View, FL. They have two boys each and seven grandchildren. Ruth is a graduate of Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA. She worked for ten years as the City Clerk of Belle View and was also a member of the Friends of the Library and on the Board of Directors for the Belle View Library. That library is the oldest working library in the state of Florida. Funds from a generous donor provided for a new addition to house a collection of flora and fauna of Florida. Since the donor wanted to keep the old historic library, this addition was encompassed all under one roof! Ruth tells us the story of how she would come to our library so often that she jokingly told Wilma that she might as well hire her. Well, Wilma did! Welcome to our staff, Ruth!

Two New Committees Formed - Help Needed!
What Does the E-Committee Do?
by Judith Vaughn

The e-committee, a new standing committee, is responsible for doing the general computer work of Friends. It maintains the website, the database of membership, and the e-mail address books; welcomes new members who have e-addresses; sends e-announcements of programs, social events, and meetings to the membership; does short-term task assignments such as designing flyers and small posters; participates in the listserv of Friends of Libraries USA, sharing problems, ideas, and solutions with Friends groups from all over the country.
Fundraiser Committee Chairman Needed
by Judy Shaner

The new Fundraising Committee met on June 13th to focus on how best to raise money to help meet the special needs of our library. We have a wonderful group of people on this committee and many activities are being considered, but we need someone to coordinate their efforts. Your job will be to search out and field ideas we can as a group make into both sustaining and annual fundraising projects. If you are interested in sharing your time and talents to help our library provide for our community, then please come to our next meeting.
